Lolita Book Cover

This is a book cover redesign for Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. The book has a history of covers that go directly against the author's wishes by depicting a young girl, so my design aims to correct that. I wanted to convey the horror of Lolita's plot with striking colors and disturbing visuals.
Process
I started by making a mood board of what I initially wanted my cover to feel like. I based most of the imagery on the quote by Nabokov, but I knew I wanted a slightly horrific vibe to the cover. The pinned butterfly really spoke to me, so I decided to focus one the motif of a pinned insect.
The pin idea represents how Humbert Humbert, the book's narrator, scrutinized and trapped his victim, a 12-year-old girl named Dolores.

From there, I sketched out a honeybee design and then drew it in Clip Studio Paint. I then printed out my drawing, stuck pins in it, took photos of the pinned drawing, and then cleaned up the photos in Photoshop.
I put the first bee on the front cover, but didn't have many ideas on what to do with the back cover. Following peer feedback, I drew the other side of the bee to use for my back cover. However, I decided to make it unpinned and clip its wings to make it more visually distinct to the front cover bee. The clipped wings represent how Humbert Humbert stole Dolores' childhood and abused her.
The image on the right is me exploring with type. I ultimately decided on using Operetta 12 because it was extremely thin, relatively uniform in width, and felt dainty.
Design Iterations
Then I started experimenting with different layouts and image editing.
For my final design, I wanted a more muted red for less strain on the eyes. I chose to keep it to only red and black to make the design more simple and consistent. The black border on the final design serves to separate the sections of the book (front, spine, back) and break up the design.
