Process
I started by making a mood board, which was heavily inspired by the vintage cake trend that used ornate icing decorations.
I sketched out my initial ideas and explored typography choices.
I ended up going with Melts Script Rough for the heading text and Sant Joan Despi for the body text, since they both fit the cake imagery the most.
Below are sketches I drew in Clip Studio Paint. I wanted to incorporate the ornate details from the vintage cake trend into my design, so I experimented with different patterns and levels of decoration.
Following peer feedback, I changed the designs and inked them. I kept the top and bottom of the cake detailed, but changed the center of the cake to have a simpler design. I also experimented with making a version of the cake with a slice cut out.
I decided the final would have a slice cut out of it—it introduced movement to the poster.
For color palette, I knew I wanted to make it pink, but I was experimenting with how vibrant I would make it. I chose the color palette of the cake on the far right because it was pastel, which maintained the dainty and elegant feel of my poster.
Design Iterations
These are some design directions I played with. The poster on the left was an early version of the poster. The poster on the right is almost the same as the final version, but it has a different font on the cake slice.
