For these flyers, my client was The Commissary, a shared commercial kitchen and food business incubator. They were holding an event called Taste & See to celebrate their 5th anniversary and raise funds. They needed two posters—one to promote the event in general, and one to showcase that Harlem chef Melba Wilson would be in attendance.

Process–General Flyer

To help me start, the client gave me this image as inspiration. I liked the use of cursive in the Taste & See event title. I also decided to keep the color palette they used since it matched their logo well. Using those two elements, I made the first version of the flyer.

For the first iteration, the design focused on an image collage. The client wanted images related to food preparation or textures, so I used both. I didn't edit the images at all in this stage, since I needed to see if the client liked the images I used. I also used a different cursive font for the title. It's more sophisticated than the uniformity of the original font. For the rest of the text, I kept it a rounded sans serif to match with the title text.

I decided to experiment with 3 different layouts for my next round of designs. I kept all fonts the same, but the client wanted different pictures. They wanted bright images that featured a spread of different foods. For each flyer, I played around with the presentation of text.

Process–Melba Wilson Flyer

At the same time I was working on the Taste & See flyer, I needed to create a flyer promoting Melba Wilson's appearance at the event. They gave me the text I needed and 2 different design directions—one flyer with Wilson's image as the background, and one without.

I kept the design theme consistent between this flyer and the general Taste & See flyer.

After these designs, I only needed to make some changes. On the right poster, the heading text was too hard to see, so I added a translucent light background behind it for more contrast. For both posters, I added the ticket link QR code.

Social Media Crops

My final step was to reformat each poster into social media-friendly images.
